Sal Varva
Sal Varva is the quiet knife of the Pirate Sea... more ghost than man, more rumor than legend. Where other Warcaptains fly flags and spill rum to announce their presence, Varva’s ship, the Foambreaker, is said to emerge from the fog without wind or sail, strike unseen, and vanish into the shallows before the alarm bells stop ringing.
A master of smuggling, infiltration, and deepwater sabotage, Sal Varva rarely speaks above a whisper and never raises his voice. His ship is specially built to slip through coral reefs, river mouths, and swamp estuaries too treacherous for normal pirates to enter. He’s the only Warcaptain the lizardfolk of the Blackwater Delta tolerate… or possibly fear.
Varn sits rarely at the Warcaptain’s table in Deepberth. But when he does, deals are cut, secrets are traded, and enemies disappear shortly after.

Overview
A master of smuggling, infiltration, and deepwater sabotage, Sal Varva rarely speaks above a whisper and never raises his voice. His ship is specially built to slip through coral reefs, river mouths, and swamp estuaries too treacherous for normal pirates to enter. It is rumored that he’s the only Warcaptain the lizardfolk of the remote jungles tolerate — or possibly fear.
Varva rarely sits at the Warcaptain’s table in Deepberth. But when he does, deals are cut, secrets are traded, and enemies disappear shortly after. His smuggling network reaches from the Kingdom of Koramia to the Freecity of Neptaris.
Description
Sal Varva cuts a spectral figure upon the deck: a gaunt man draped in salt-bleached robes that hang like sea-worn burial shrouds, stitched with barnacle-thread and frayed by brine. His skin is pallid as driftwood, stretched tight over his bones, and his long, silver-black hair clings damply to his cheeks, as if forever soaked by storm spray. His eyes are tideglass gray, empty and reflective, as though they’ve stared too long into the depths. Coral fragments and bits of shattered shell adorn his fingers and cloak. They are trophies or talismans… no one is sure. When he moves, it’s with the hush of a man walking underwater, and the air around him smells faintly of kelp, rust, and rot. Sailors say he never blinks.
Background
Sal Varva’s past is shrouded in as much mist as the seas he sails. Some whisper he was once a priest of a coastal god, cast out for necromantic heresies; others claim he died in a shipwreck decades ago and clawed his way back from the deep with lungs full of seawater and secrets. More skeptical heads claim Varva was born on one of the hundred islands off the Aebasan coast to a smuggler mother and unknown father. He learned to sail by the age of six, was running silent routes for his mother by the age of eight and learned to kill by the age of twelve. It is rumored he served under a dozen pirate captains and none out-survived him (though certainly... certainly not because he killed any of them). He's known to be a master of deception and escape, having most notably escaped a slave galley hold while chained, bleeding and underwater... his chains were found, but not his guards.
It is said he captured the Foambreaker, a shallow-draft vessel that seems to drift even against the wind, from an undead crew. He became a Warcaptain three years ago not through force, but by outmaneuvering and blackmailing three rival fleet captains into surrendering their shares of Deepberth’s Anchorfall docks.
