The divine servants of Taltos the Deepdweller are known as the Courtiers of the Abyssal Court. They are not mere attendants, nor mindless extensions of divine will, but calculating entities of rank and function, each holding a place within the vast and silent hierarchy that surrounds the Deepdweller. To the faithful, the Abyssal Court is not a place of ceremony, but of endless evaluation, where power, knowledge, and usefulness determine one’s standing. The Courtiers embody this principle. Each is a master of some domain of the deep, whether currents, creatures, fear, or the hidden mechanisms of trade and ruin.

Courtiers are said to arise in several ways. Some are ancient beings of the deep, older than mortal memory, elevated through alignment with Taltos’ will. Others are believed to be the transformed remnants of mortals who proved sufficiently cunning or ruthless to earn preservation beyond death. A few are whispered to be fragments of Taltos himself, given form to observe, test, and manipulate the world above. Regardless of origin, all Courtiers share a defining trait: they understand the structure beneath chaos, and act accordingly.

Each Courtier holds a rank within the Abyssal Court, though these ranks are fluid and contested. Advancement is not granted by favor, but by demonstration of effectiveness. A Courtier that fails may be diminished, absorbed, or replaced without ceremony. To encounter a Courtier is not to receive judgment in the moral sense. Instead, one is weighed for usefulness. Bargains may be offered, knowledge exchanged, or doom quietly ensured, depending entirely on what the Courtier determines to be of value.

The least of Taltos the Deepdweller's Seven Courtiers of the Abyssal Court, yet still far beyond mortal comprehension, Ashkaru-Namtar governs judgment of worth and survival. He is said to appear as a robed figure of black water with a featureless face, his form constantly eroding and reforming, as though exploring and recreating its own stability. He is associated with the great white shark, whose cold, instinctive judgment separates the living from the dead without hesitation or malice.

Belshunu Eraesh

Keeper of the Sounding Depths

Master of hidden routes, currents, and unseen passage, Belshunu charts what cannot be mapped. He manifests as a drifting lattice of bone-like structures threaded with dim lights, like a map that rearranges itself as it is observed. He is said to be master of the lendary giant squids, beings of the deep that move through unseen pathways and strike from darkness with precise, knowing force.

This Courtier of Taltos the Deepweller rules over sea monsters and abyssal spawn, directing their movements and hungers. Kalammat appears as a hulking, many-limbed mass with indistinct features, as though countless creatures have been fused into a single, writhing will. He is represented by the kraken, the ultimate expression of overwhelming, many-limbed destruction rising from the depths.

Zullatu

Mistress of the Drowned Pact

Zullatu is one of Taltos the Deepdweller's Seven Courtiers of the Abyssal Court and embodies alliances, betrayal, and shifting loyalty, binding followers together until the moment of fracture. She is described as a tall, veiled figure whose form splits and recombines into multiple silhouettes, never entirely singular. Her associated creature is the moray eel, which coils within hidden crevices and strikes with sudden, treacherous precision.

Kurra Ithburu

Bearer of the Fifth Descent

Among Taltos the Deepdweller's Abyssal Court, Kurra Ithburu is the Courtier of knowledge and layered truth, governing the dark philosophies and wisdoms of Taltos. He appears as a column of suspended objects, bones, coins, and fragments of ships, all slowly orbiting an unseen center. He is linked to the anglerfish, whose faint light lures the curious closer to truths that cannot be escaped once seen.

Shadue Urgulu

One of Taltos the Deepdweller's Courtiers, this entity represents consumption, inevitability, and final claim. Shadue Urgulu manifests as an immense, partially formed head ringed with inward-turning teeth, emerging from darkness without revealing the body that must follow. He is said to be master of the gulper eels, whose distended jaws swallow prey whole, embodying the certainty that all things are eventually taken.

Etemmu-Zu

The highest of the Courtiers, Etemmu-Zu serves as speaker, observer, and executor of Taltos’ will. It is never seen directly, only heard as layered voices carried through pressure and current, speaking with perfect clarity from every direction at once. It is associated with the sperm whale, a deep-diving intelligence whose haunting calls travel vast distances through the dark, unseen world below.
